Science

Michigan Department of Education has chosen the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)  as our K–12 science content standards. The NGSS were developed by states to improve science education for all students. A goal for developing the NGSS was to create a set of research-based, up-to-date K–12 science standards. At Fenton Area Public Schools, we use a rigorous curricular resource selection process to choose which resources we will use to teach these standards the state as set for us.

Currently, we are undergoing a Science Resource Pilot for grades K-2 and 3-5.   We are currently piloting MSU (Michigan State University) Solid Start at the early elementary level and Mystery Science at the 3-5 level.  Decisions on implementation will take place at the end of the 19-20 school year.

We utilize Mi-Star Curriculum at the middle school level which is curriculum created in partnership with Michigan Technological University.

We are also currently undergoing a curricular resource audit at the high school level to ensure we have updated resources that match the NGSS standards.  Decisions on science needs will be made during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school year.

Social Studies

The Michigan Department of Education just passed this last year new MDE Social Studies Standards.  See the link below to see these standards.

Currently, FAPS teacher leaders and department members are doing a curricular audit of these new standards and matching what we currently use to see if we need a new or updated resources at all levels.  Look for updated resources based on our work in 2019-20. Many classrooms across our district are using OpenEd Resources currently.
